Former Abia First Lady, Odochi Orji, Resigns from PDP

Mrs. Odochi Orji, former First Lady of Abia State, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Her resignation was formalized in a letter dated May 21, 2024, addressed to the PDP Chairman of her Umuahia Urban Ward 1.

This development comes shortly after her son, Chinedum Orji, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, also left the PDP. Mrs. Orji, who served as First Lady during her husband Senator Theodore Orji’s tenure as governor from 2007 to 2015, cited personal reasons for her departure. She did not indicate her future political plans.

In her resignation letter, Mrs. Orji expressed gratitude for the support she received during her tenure and as a party member. She wrote:

“I write to formally resign as a member of the PDP with effect from this day, May 21, 2024, for personal reasons. Thank you for your support during my tenure as the First Lady of Abia and until date a strong supporter of the party. I wish you all the best.”

The letter was also copied to the Abia State Chairman of the PDP and the Acting National Chairman of the party.

It remains uncertain if her husband, Senator Theodore Orji, who served two terms as governor and later as a senator under the PDP, will follow suit and leave the party.

Senator Orji’s aide, Hon Ifeanyi Umere, confirmed Mrs. Orji’s resignation. This resignation is part of a broader trend of notable exits from the PDP in the South East, following the departure of former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha.
