Plateau Athletes Triumph in First Taraba Marathon

Athletes from Plateau State dominated the inaugural Taraba Marathon on Saturday, held in Jalingo, the state capital, braving early morning rain to win both the men’s and women’s categories.

Event Highlights:

  1. Weather Challenges: Despite heavy rainfall in Jalingo, Plateau athletes emerged victorious, capturing the top spots in both the male and female races.
  2. Race Route: The 21-kilometer marathon commenced at the flyover bridge on Roadblock, traversed Barde Way and Bye Pass, and concluded at Jolly Nyame Stadium.
  3. Winners:
  • Men’s Category: Newforth Mathias from Plateau State clinched first place with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 41 seconds.
  • Women’s Category: Charity Ogufure, also from Plateau State, secured victory with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 22 seconds.
  1. Support from Government: The Commissioner of Sports, Joseph Joshua, highlighted that the marathon is part of preparations for the upcoming World Olympics and other major sports events. He commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his dedication to sports development, noting that plans to refurbish the Jolly Nyame Stadium are in progress.
  2. Annual Event Announcement: The commissioner revealed that the marathon will become an annual fixture, drawing participants from all over the country.
  3. Athlete Feedback: Both winners credited their success to intensive training and commitment, expressing appreciation to the Taraba State government for the opportunity to compete. Other participants mentioned that the rain affected their performance.
