IGP Urges Nigerians to Resist Police Extortion

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has called on Nigerians to resist any attempts by police officers to extort money or property from them. Speaking at the force headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with key officers overseeing internal control mechanisms, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of bridging the trust gap between the police force and the public.

Egbetokun highlighted the need for swift justice against officers who violate professional standards and called for robust measures to prevent unprofessional conduct within the force. “Over the years, we have observed that the conduct of some personnel significantly deviated from the expectations of the force leadership,” the IGP stated.

He urged the public to stand firm against any form of intimidation from police officers, asserting that they should not part with their hard-earned money or properties. “I urge the public never to succumb to intimidation or part with their hard-earned money or properties unjustly,” Egbetokun added.

The IGP encouraged citizens to report any infractions by police officers to the appropriate authorities and instructed senior officers to recommend personnel who demonstrate exceptional acts of courage, integrity, and humanity. This initiative aims to enhance accountability and foster a more trustworthy relationship between the police and the public.
