Saudi Authorities Arrest Seven Nigerian Pilgrims Over Missing NUSUK Hajj Cards

Seven Nigerian pilgrims have been detained in Saudi Arabia for failing to possess NUSUK identity cards, essential for performing this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah. The arrests occurred on June 5 and 6, outside their hotels, and involved pilgrims from two different states.

In Saudi Arabia, lacking a Hajj permit, or aiding those without one, carries severe penalties, including a SR10,000 fine, up to six months’ imprisonment, deportation, and a 10-year ban from the country.

The identities of the arrested pilgrims have not been disclosed, and it remains uncertain if any interventions by Nigeria’s National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) have facilitated their release.

NAHCON has reiterated the importance of collecting and using NUSUK cards for the Hajj exercise. A circular issued by the commission emphasized that all Nigerian pilgrims must ensure they possess these cards upon arrival in Makkah. The commission highlighted the ongoing efforts to increase awareness among pilgrims regarding the necessity of the NUSUK ID cards.

Dr. Aliyu Tanko, NAHCON’s Makkah Coordinator, stressed the importance of having these cards at all times for identification and access to key areas during Hajj. Pilgrims with smartphones are encouraged to download the NUSUK app to access digital copies of their cards.

The commission warned that not having a Hajj permit or aiding those without one could result in significant penalties. They urged state Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and tour operators to ensure their pilgrims adhere to these guidelines to avoid any disruptions in their spiritual journey.

NAHCON chairman, Jalal Arabi, has also emphasized the importance of the NUSUK cards in various meetings with state pilgrim boards and Hajj tour operators. He reiterated that the NUSUK card is mandatory for identification and access during the Hajj exercise, as mandated by the highest religious authority in Saudi Arabia.
