Lagos Impounds 40 Vehicles for Illegal Parking, Road Obstruction

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 40 vehicles for operating illegal garages and obstructing traffic in the Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota areas.

This action, which included 25 commercial and 15 private vehicles, was announced on LASTMA’s X handle on Friday, June 21.

The operation targeted unauthorized garages causing severe traffic disruptions in these key areas. The enforcement was led by Kayode Odunuga under the guidance of Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation.

“In a determined effort to restore order and improve traffic flow, LASTMA, directed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, focused on illegal garages that have long been a source of congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters,” the statement read.

Giwa underscored the importance of enforcing traffic regulations to maintain smooth traffic flow and public safety.

“Illegal garages significantly impede our efforts to ensure seamless traffic movement in Lagos. The impoundment of these vehicles serves as a clear message that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger lives,” he stated.

He added that this initiative is part of a larger plan to enhance the city’s transportation network and ensure law and order on the roads.

“Our objective is to create a safe and orderly environment for all road users, and this action is a crucial step toward achieving that goal,” Giwa noted.

The focus areas, Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota, are notorious for traffic congestion due to unauthorized parking and makeshift garages. LASTMA’s intervention aimed to clear these blockages and improve traffic conditions in these critical zones.

Local residents and business owners have welcomed the government’s actions, recognizing the positive impact on their daily activities. LASTMA has assured the public that this operation will continue and expand to other parts of the city plagued by illegal garages and related issues.

Giwa emphasized the need for all vehicle owners and operators to adhere to state traffic laws and cooperate with authorities to avoid penalties. He reiterated the government’s dedication to making Lagos a more pleasant and livable city for everyone.

Giwa also urged drivers to treat the roads responsibly and to report any broken-down or abandoned vehicles to LASTMA promptly.
