Nigeria’s Problems Well-Known, Offer Solutions Not Excuses – Peter Obi Urges Tinubu’s Government

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed disappointment with the current administration’s response to Nigeria’s pressing issues. Obi emphasized that the challenges facing the nation are well-known to all Nigerians and urged leaders to provide solutions rather than excuses.

Obi criticized statements from government officials downplaying Nigeria’s struggles by comparing them to global issues. He argued that true leadership involves offering direction, guidance, and concrete solutions, especially during crises.

In a post on his X handle on Friday, Obi, who previously served as the governor of Anambra State, highlighted the need for a thorough plan of action to address the country’s unique problems. He called on leaders to focus on specific solutions rather than making general statements that dismiss the severity of Nigerians’ experiences.

“The problems facing Nigeria are well-known to all Nigerians. We are the poverty capital of the world, among the most insecure people on earth, among the hungriest, have poor education quality and the highest number of out-of-school children, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, the highest income gap between the poor and the rich, high corruption perception index, infrastructure and healthcare challenges, and more,” Obi wrote.

“It is disheartening to hear those in charge, who were hired to address our problems, make statements like ‘we are not the only ones struggling with poverty and hunger.’ Instead of merely acknowledging that other countries face similar challenges, we need to hear a thorough plan of action to tackle our unique struggles.”

Obi stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing Nigeria’s issues and criticized the current administration for failing to provide a clear roadmap. He emphasized that a true leader should offer reassurance and practical solutions, not just acknowledge existing problems.

“I urge those in leadership positions to offer tangible solutions, not mere reminders that others face similar challenges. We need a comprehensive approach to tackle our specific challenges, not generalizations that dismiss our experiences,” he stated.

Obi concluded by likening effective leadership to that of a pilot who, during turbulence, reassures passengers and takes decisive action to ensure safety. He urged Nigerian leaders to adopt this approach to restore trust and guide the nation towards a brighter future.

“Only then can we begin to trust that our country is in capable hands, working towards a brighter future for all Nigerians,” he added.
