Chief Imam of Ogbomoso Asserts Independence from Soun’s Authority

Sheik Teliat Yinus Ayilara, the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, has firmly asserted that his role is not a traditional title and, therefore, not subject to the control of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye.

In a letter responding to a query from the Soun, Ayilara emphasized that the Chief Imam operates independently of the traditional ruler’s authority. The Soun had issued a query to Ayilara for traveling to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage without prior notification.

Ayilara, through a letter signed by his secretary Ogunleye Sulaimon Ajasa, explained that he responded to the Soun’s letters out of respect for Yoruba culture and tradition. However, he clarified that his duties as a Muslim and spiritual leader are governed by Islamic regulations, not traditional Yoruba customs.

“My case is that the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland is not a traditional title, and as such, it is not under the control of Soun of Ogbomosoland,” Ayilara stated. He also highlighted that there is an ongoing court case regarding this matter and urged respect for the judicial process.

Ayilara addressed specific points raised by the Soun, including the reversal of certain religious appointments he made. He reiterated that his actions are in accordance with Islamic practices and not subject to traditional authority. Ayilara concluded by stating that he has forwarded the Soun’s letters to his lawyers for further action.

“God bless Ogbomosoland, God bless Oyo State, and God bless Nigeria at large,” he added, affirming his commitment to both his faith and the broader community.
