FCCPC Urges Nigerian Government to Reopen Borders for Legal Food Imports Amid Hardship

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to reopen the country’s borders to facilitate the legal importation of food items. This move, according to the commission, is crucial to alleviating hunger and stabilizing market prices across the nation.

During an advocacy meeting held at the Emir’s palace in Bauchi, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, emphasized the necessity of reopening borders to allow legitimate food imports. He underscored the commission’s commitment to advocating against price gouging and unfair trade practices in Nigerian markets.

“Our visit aims to sensitize stakeholders on their consumer rights and equip them with knowledge about identifying counterfeit products and reporting grievances through proper channels,” Abdullahi explained.

Expressing concern over the soaring prices of commodities exacerbated by the recent strengthening of the naira against the dollar, Abdullahi described the situation as unacceptable. He reiterated FCCPC’s dedication to promoting fair competition and protecting consumers’ interests.

In response to these concerns, the Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, represented by the District Head of Lame, Alhaji Yakubu Aliyu Lame, highlighted the plight of citizens grappling with high food prices. He urged swift government intervention to alleviate the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.

The Emir pledged the traditional institution’s support in raising awareness about FCCPC’s initiatives, ensuring that the message reaches every corner of the state and beyond.

The FCCPC’s advocacy underscores the urgent need for policy adjustments to facilitate legal food imports and mitigate the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly in the current climate of rising prices and inflation.
