Abia PDP Congress: Atu Urges Against Imposition, Advocates for Internal Democracy

Ahead of the State and National Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lazarus Atu, a prominent party chieftain in Abia State, has issued a stern warning against the imposition of unpopular candidates. Atu emphasized the importance of upholding internal democracy within the party and ensuring that candidates emerge through fair and constitutional processes.

The directive follows the recent decision by the State Party Caucus to zone the chairmanship position of the PDP in Abia to Abia North, a move aimed at fostering inclusivity and equitable representation within the party.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, Atu stressed the fundamental principles of democracy and party ethics. “The hallmark of internal democracy is that candidates should emerge through processes endorsed by the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act of our country,” he stated unequivocally.

Atu condemned any attempts at imposition, describing such actions as abnormal, unethical, and detrimental to the growth of democracy. “Imposition in elections breeds questionable candidates and violates our party’s laws,” he asserted.

He further advocated for a transparent nomination process where candidates are selected based on merit and consensus among party members. “Intimidating or coercing party faithful to support specific aspirants undermines our collective unity and aspirations,” Atu added.

Promising to resist any form of imposition, Atu reiterated the commitment of genuine PDP members in Abia State to uphold the principles of freedom, liberty, and progress within the party. “We must demonstrate to the world that we stand against impunity and uphold the unity and cohesion of our great party,” he affirmed.

In conclusion, Atu called on the leadership of the PDP in Abia State to ensure that the forthcoming congresses are conducted in a transparent and democratic manner, devoid of any form of imposition or manipulation.
