Atiku Abubakar Vows to Keep Contesting for Nigerian Presidency
Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his determination to continue contesting for the presidency as long as he remains in good health. In an interview with the Hausa service of Voice of America in Abuja, Atiku affirmed his commitment to pursuing the highest office in Nigeria.
Atiku, who will be 81 by the time the next presidential election occurs in 2027, emphasized his unwavering resolve, stating, “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy. Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.”
Reflecting on his past attempts, Atiku acknowledged the challenges within the PDP and the necessity for broad support and collaboration with other political entities to secure a victory in future elections. He noted, “Given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required.”
Atiku has run for the presidency six times, appearing on the ballot as a presidential candidate on three occasions—in 2007, 2019, and 2023. Drawing inspiration from historical figures, he remarked, “I am consoled by the fact that former United States President Abraham Lincoln did not win the presidential vote on the first time of asking.”
Addressing the internal crisis within the PDP, Atiku stressed the importance of unity and strategic alliances with other political groups to enhance their chances in the 2027 presidential election. This perspective aligns with recent speculations about a potential coalition with other parties.
Last week, Atiku met with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), which sparked rumors of a possible political alliance. Speaking about their meeting, Atiku reassured, “This is to anybody that thinks there is going to be a misunderstanding between me and Obi, let me assure you that not even a small issue is going to happen between us. Also, we are going to be behind anybody that will be chosen to represent us in the forthcoming elections.”
Atiku’s remarks underscore his enduring ambition and his strategic approach to fostering alliances, aiming to strengthen his political influence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
