Dumebi Kachikwu, a candidate for president from the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in the recent election, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration did not implement a structured strategy for ending the fuel subsidy.

According to Gist legit, Tinubu stated that the “fuel subsidy” has been eliminated during his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023.

He stated that the fuel subsidy was not included in the year’s budget beginning in June in the budget that Muhamadu Buhari, his predecessor, had proposed.

Kachikwu stated on Monday that the current president of Nigeria, Tinubu, received a banana peel from the previous president, Buhari, when he spoke about the recent suffering and cries of Nigerians in response to the president’s declaration regarding fuel subsidies.

As indicated by him, Buhari would have rather not take responsibility with the fuel subsidy a couple of days prior to leaving office; as a result, pushed it to the coming.

According to Gist legit, Kachikwu made this statement on Monday while he was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Obviously, the President was handed a banana peel by the outgoing President, Buhari, who failed to provide for subsidy beyond June when he was leaving office. He obviously did not want to deal with that and he pushed on that responsibility to the incoming government.

“We also understand that the Nigerian economy is in tatters, the government doesn’t have the funding, and the NNPC is in the state of near comatose. They will crumble if they continue to fund subsidy; they are said to be owed over two trillion naira at the moment. President Tinubu just informed Nigerians of the situation he was meeting,” Kachikwu stated.

Talking further, Kachikwu stated that Nigerians knew that there was no provision for subsidy past June except for that they didn’t expect that any administration would need to manage it the manner in which the current government did, adding that they anticipated that an organized methodology should manage it.

Kachikwu criticized the labor unions in response to the planned strike by Organised Labour over the elimination of fuel subsidies, claiming that the labor unions were aware that the government was going to eliminate fuel subsidies and that all presidential candidates had promised to do the same but had never voiced their displeasure.

He urged Tinubu to take immediate measures to mitigate the impact of subsidy removal and urged the Federal Government to pursue those who were abusing the system.
