Chadian Prime Minister Resigns Following Election Defeat to Junta Chief

Chadian Prime Minister, Succes Masra, has officially resigned from his position, submitting his resignation to the newly elected junta chief, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, on Wednesday. Masra’s resignation comes two weeks after he lost the presidential elections to the junta, led by Deby.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Masra confirmed his resignation, noting that the transitional government had become irrelevant following the conclusion of the presidential election. He expressed his decision to step down along with the transitional government, acknowledging the shift in political dynamics with the election outcome.

The 40-year-old Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno ascended to power in April 2021 after his father, former President Idriss Deby Itno, was killed by rebels, ending his three-decade-long rule. Deby Itno’s victory in the May 6 presidential vote, securing 61 percent of the ballot according to final results, solidified his position as the transitional president.

Masra, who had previously been a vocal opponent of Deby before assuming the role of prime minister four months ago, garnered 18.5 percent of the vote in the presidential election but contested the results. His resignation marks a significant development in Chad’s political landscape, reflecting the transition of power to the newly elected leadership under Deby Itno’s leadership.
