Ex-President Jonathan Urges Cooperation Between Fubara and Wike for Rivers State’s Development
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called for unity between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to ensure the progress and well-being of Rivers State.
Jonathan, addressing an event organized by the Rivers State Government to inaugurate the Trans-Kalabari Road Project, expressed concern over the difficulties associated with power transitions in Nigeria. He noted that while transitions at the national level are managed more effectively, state-level transitions often face significant challenges.
Referring to the political tension in Rivers State, Jonathan emphasized the importance of collaboration between the current governor and the former governor. “The political tension in the state is becoming too much,” he warned. “Transition in Nigeria is becoming a problem. At the state level, it’s becoming noisy in so many states. Outgoing governors and incoming governors must know that they work together for the collective interest of the citizens of the state.”
Jonathan highlighted the critical role of Rivers State within the Niger Delta, stating, “Rivers State is the heart of the Niger Delta. If Rivers State is destabilized, the whole Niger Delta will be destabilized.” He urged political leaders to adopt the principle of give and take to prevent crises and ensure stability.
The former President praised the Trans-Kalabari Road Project, recognizing its potential to spur economic development and enhance security by reducing accidents on waterways. “When you make major roads across the riverine areas, you have solved numerous problems,” he said, commending Governor Fubara for his vision and commitment to initiating the project.
Jonathan encouraged the people of Rivers State to support their governor, acknowledging Fubara’s focus and dedication to advancing the state. “He has shown within this short period that he is somebody who is focused and who has the commitment to move Rivers State to a higher level,” Jonathan stated, calling for maximum cooperation from all stakeholders.
