House Committee Summons DISCOs and GENCOs Over CSR Failures
The House of Representatives Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has summoned electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and generation companies (GENCOs) due to their failure to fulfill their CSR commitments in host communities.
Key Issues:
- Lack of Attendance: The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the failure of the CEOs of DISCOs and GENCOs to attend the meeting, sending junior managers instead without proper authorization.
- Non-Submission of Documents: The companies failed to submit their five-year audited accounts and detailed information on their CSR activities in host communities.
Committee’s Stance:
- Disrespect Noted: Committee member Obiageli Orogbu highlighted the disrespect shown by GENCOs for not sending representatives and criticized DISCOs for the inadequacy of their representatives.
- New Summons Issued: The Clerk of the committee, Emmanuel Chukwu, was instructed to issue a new summons for the DISCOs and GENCOs to appear in June.
- Potential Consequences: Orogbu warned that failure to comply with the new summons would result in the committee taking appropriate measures to compel attendance.
Purpose of the Meeting:
The interactive session aimed to assess how the DISCOs and GENCOs have been engaging with their host communities through CSR programs. Orogbu stressed that the committee has the backing of the House leadership for this assignment and expects full cooperation from the electricity companies.
