Kano Assembly Abolishes Five Emirs and Dissolves Emirate Councils
The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils in the state, granting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf the sole authority to appoint new Emirs. This decision followed deliberations during a plenary session on Thursday, during which the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill was considered and passed after second and third readings.
Revival of Kano’s Glory
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu explained that repealing the previous law would restore Kano’s lost glory. He argued that the division of the Kano Emirate into five separate entities had diminished the state’s capacity and dignity at the national level.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage
Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala emphasized that the emirate council served as a custodian of culture, which had been disrupted by the creation of additional emirates. He explained that the amendment of the law abolishes the five emirate councils, with the Commissioner for Local Governments appointed as the overseer.
Establishment of a New Emirate Council
In addition to dissolving the existing councils, the House adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state, further restructuring the traditional leadership framework in Kano.
