Kano Government Confirms Acquisition of SUVs for Lawmakers
The Kano State Government has officially acknowledged the procurement of 41 ‘exotic’ sports utility vehicles (SUVs), each valued at N68 million, for members of the State House of Assembly.
Confirming the acquisition, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, asserted that providing lawmakers with functional vehicles is essential for their effective performance of duties.
According to Sagagi, while recognizing the economic circumstances, the governor instructed that payment arrangements with the contractor be spread out over a period to alleviate financial strain.
This decision, Sagagi emphasized, reflects the governor’s commitment to upholding the rights and responsibilities of all government bodies while prioritizing the welfare of the state’s citizens.
Addressing criticisms surrounding the purchase, a ranking lawmaker defended the acquisition, pointing out that similar actions were taken by previous administrations in the state. He justified the necessity of the vehicles for legislative functions, including oversight duties.
Although there were initial hesitations from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf regarding the procurement, the plea from principal officers of the Assembly ultimately led to the decision to acquire the vehicles.
