Lagos Govt Reports 82 Casualties and N25.37 Billion Losses Due to Fire Outbreaks
The Lagos State Government has reported that recent fire outbreaks have resulted in 82 casualties and property losses amounting to N25.37 billion. This information was disclosed by Gbenga Oyerinde, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, in a statement released on Monday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of these incidents. According to Oyerinde, LASEMA successfully rescued 376 individuals and managed to preserve property valued at approximately N152.22 billion.
“Fire safety officers from LASEMA successfully rescued 376 victims and preserved property estimated to be worth N152.22 billion. Unfortunately, the ministry recorded 82 casualties and property losses worth N25.37 billion,” Oyerinde stated.
In response to these incidents and as part of efforts to enhance fire safety infrastructure, the Lagos State Government is nearing the completion of three new fire stations located in Ijegun-Egba, Satellite Town, and Ijede. Additionally, an ultramodern workshop at the Alausa headquarters is almost ready to support the maintenance of the agency’s fleet. Plans are also underway for the development of additional fire stations in Ibeju-Lekki and Ifako-Ijaiye.
These measures are part of the government’s ongoing commitment to improving emergency response and fire safety across the state, aiming to better protect lives and property from future fire-related incidents.
