New Law Empowers Reinstated Kingmakers to Reinstall Sanusi as Sole Emir of Kano

The New Kano Emirate Councils Law has reinstated the five demoted kingmakers to their former positions and empowered them to reinstall former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Muhammadu Sanusi, as the sole Emir of Kano. The law mandates the governor to take necessary measures to restore the Kano Emirate System to its status prior to the repealed Principal Law dated December 5, 2019, thereby granting the state government the authority to reappoint Sanusi.

Restoration of Traditional Offices

According to the law, traditional office holders and title holders who were elevated or appointed under the repealed Principal Law will revert to their previous positions, recognized by custom and tradition before the enactment of the repealed law. This provision effectively reinstates the five demoted kingmakers and empowers them to select the new Emir, who will then be endorsed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Oversight of Transitional Arrangements

The law also assigns the commissioner responsible for Local Government to oversee all transitional arrangements, including the management of assets and liabilities of the abolished emirates and the new structure created under the repealed Principal Law. This oversight ensures a smooth transition and adherence to the new legal framework.
