Six Dead, Many Injured in Trailer Crash at IMSU Junction
A tragic accident at IMSU Junction along Okigwe Road in Owerri, Imo State, resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to many others. The incident involved a Mack Truck, which lost control and collided with four minibusses and several pedestrians.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the accident, reporting that the truck driver, heading towards IMSU Junction from Orji, veered onto the wrong side of the road. The crash occurred around 5:45 PM on May 18, 2024.
Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma mobilized officers to the scene, where they, along with bystanders, helped evacuate the injured to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Owerri. Six victims were declared dead on arrival, while efforts continue to save the injured.
The truck driver fled the scene, and efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend him. The Commissioner of Police expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged road users to drive responsibly and ensure their vehicles’ roadworthiness.
