Tanitoluwa Adewumi: Meet 10-Year Old Nigerian Kid Who Is Now USA National Chess Master
Tanitoluwa Adewumi, a New York-based 10-year-old, is now recognized as a United States National Chess Master.
It’s a dream come true for the boy who won the New York State chess championship when he was just 8 years old and lived in a shelter for the homeless.
Adewumi most recently won his most recent championship with a chess rating of 2223.
Adewumi achieved the rating of over 2200 points from games, which is required to win the United States National Chess Master title.
It came just two years after Adewumi won the National State chess championship, which brought him national attention.
He started playing chess just a year after he and his family moved to the United States from Nigeria because they were afraid of terrorist attacks.
His family spent their first few years in New York City living in a shelter for the homeless close to a school with a chess program.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched after a number of people learned about his situation. It raised $254,000, which helped them move into a better home.
My Name is Tani, a biography based on his life, was published last year and will be made into a movie with Paramount Pictures.
