Uproar in Court as Kanu Refuses Trial, Calls Government Lawyer ‘Terrorist’

Tensions flared at the Federal High Court in Abuja as Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), vehemently refused to submit himself for trial in the terrorism charges against him.

Kanu’s refusal prompted Justice Binta Fatimat Nyako to adjourn the trial to June 19 to de-escalate the situation.

Shouting loudly, Kanu declared his defiance, asserting that the Nigerian government lacked the authority, both constitutionally and under international law, to bring criminal charges against him.

After the judge denied his request for restoration of bail and removal from DSS custody, Kanu contested the government lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, and took over arguments from his legal team.

He adamantly stated his refusal to participate in the trial, citing various legal authorities to support his objections.

When Awomolo attempted to proceed with the trial, Kanu openly called him a “terrorist” in court, sparking further uproar.

Despite Justice Nyako’s attempts to calm the situation, Kanu continued to rebuff her and verbally attacked Awomolo, accusing him of dishonesty.

In response, Awomolo remained composed, stating that Kanu’s emotional outburst was expected, and he was not offended or provoked.

To address the escalating tension, the court granted Kanu’s lawyer’s request for an adjournment to consult with him privately.

Subsequently, Justice Nyako scheduled June 19 and 21 for the commencement of the trial.
