How to handle dengue fever children

Proper fever reduction, not overuse of antibiotics or arbitrary infusion are things parents should keep in mind to avoid making children from minor illnesses worse.

Dengue fever epidemic appears in many localities when the weather is complicated. Mistakes in care and treatment can make the illness worse, even life-threatening.

Reduce fever properly

Children with fever often suddenly high 39-40 degrees C in about 2-7 days, fatigue, pain behind the eye sockets, severe headache ... Psychological impatience can make parents arbitrarily use medication fever, painkillers; overdose and rush. Parents should give their children medicine as directed by the doctor, can choose the orange-flavored medicine easy to drink for their cooperation. Parents should carefully read the ingredients and instructions for use, if unclear, you should ask the doctor to avoid children taking the wrong medicine, wrong dose.

Children with dengue fever often have low fever, especially in the early days. Even when taking a fever-reducing medicine prescribed by a doctor, it can be 30-45 minutes later, the child gets high fever again. Parents do not arbitrarily increase the dose or take oral administration while leading to an overdose. Continuous use of antipyretic drugs can cause severe liver damage, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc. Children with high fever should be taken to the hospital for timely examination and treatment.

If your baby has a fever higher than 40 degrees Celsius, you can manage it by wiping it cool. Mother put cold water and hot water into the basin, hot water is half the amount of cold water. She dipped her elbows into measuring the water temperature, feeling warm like baby bath water.

Carry out a cool wipe by dipping 5 towels in a water bath and squeezing slightly, placing 2 towels in the armpit, 2 towels in the groin and a towel all over the body. Note: Do not apply to the forehead because it has little effect on reducing fever, not on the chest because of the increased risk of pneumonia, changing towels every 2-3 minutes. Measure your baby's temperature every 15 minutes, stop cooling off when the temperature is below 38.5 degrees Celsius.

Do not abuse antibiotics

Parents should not consider antibiotics that can cure many diseases, including dengue. Antibiotics are not recommended for use in the treatment of dengue fever, except in certain cases where it is absolutely necessary. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics only if the child has dengue fever and other infections (tonsillitis, bronchitis, etc.) are severe.

Overuse of antibiotics is a major cause of oily, resistant drugs, weakening a child's immune system and wasting money. If children develop infections later in life, they may have to use stronger antibiotics, which are more expensive. More dangerous, children with atopic allergies to antibiotics can both dengue and allergy medicine (diarrhea, rash, shock ...) making the treatment complex.

In some cases, the disease progressed quickly and seriously but parents still hesitated, waiting to finish the medicine to see if their child would recover from the illness. Delay can cause children to experience complications, losing the opportunity for timely treatment.

No arbitrary infusion

Dengue children often suffer from dehydration, dry skin, dry lips, and fatigue. Parents should not arbitrarily transmit water at home with pharmacists or take their children to private clinics that are not qualified, unlicensed for this operation, and lack emergency equipment. Infusion can lead to anaphylactic shock, edema, respiratory failure, life-threatening. In fact, there have been cases of dengue children dying from this cause.

A doctor at Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) said that the patient is suffering from high fever, the reaction of the body is very strong, so if the fluid is susceptible to shock. Patients only receive infusion when prescribed by a doctor and closely monitored. The transmission speed is also very carefully calculated, especially for young children. Parents should take their children to hospitals, large medical facilities for proper examination and treatment.

Children with high fever need rehydration by drinking water such as cool boiled water, fruit juice (coconut, orange, lemon), diluted porridge water mixed with salt. If you drink oresol water, you need to mix it according to the directions on the package, use it properly and consult a doctor. Children should eat thin, easily digested food, divided into small meals. Eating enough nutrients, nutritional supplements necessary to help children recover faster.
